62nd Annual Meeting

Memphis, TN

September 28 - October 1, 2023
Hosted by Dr. Max and Sue Langham

We look forward to hosting you in Memphis!

Memphis, home of the Blues and birthplace of Rock and Roll, has a lot to offer. Conde-Nast recently named Memphis as one of 23 places in the world for tourists to visit in 2023. We plan a meeting focused on time together, community, and creativity. While much has changed over the 62 years of our organization, much remains the same. The surgeons will have time to share difficult problems faced in our work and we will host a quality scientific session. Spouses and surgeons will have time together, and with old friends with time to catch up.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the iconic Peabody Hotel.

Reserve online: Visit the hotel’s custom group rate link.

Reserve by phone: Call (901) 529-4000 and mention ”Lilliputian Surgical Society Meeting”.

For those who want to arrive early, the group rate will be available beginning Tuesday, March 27. If you wish to remain after the meeting, please contact the hotel directly to arrange your stay.

The group rate has expired.

Thursday, September 28

Visit TPC Southwind Course to learn more.

  • The iconic home of Elvis Presley has been preserved as it was when he lived (and died) there and surrounding parts of town have been turned into a Mecca for fans and include an extensive museum, memorabilia, and even his private airplanes. Tickets are $74.75 in total with tours any time between 9 am and 4 pm on the 28th. Transportation will be arranged.

    Visit Graceland to learn more.

  • The Memphis Sand Aquifer, while under threat produces very high-quality water for the Memphis metropolitan area which has consistently been recognized as having the first or second-best urban water quality in the United States. Great water is necessary for great beer and the urban microbrew scene in Memphis has exploded. These breweries include Ghost River, Wiseacre, High Cotton, Crosstown, Memphis Made, and Grind City, along with the Old Dominick distillery. Dr Regan Williams will be hosting a tasting tour that will include lunch and music stops along the way. Price and schedule are to be determined based on headcount.

What could be better than catching up with friends? We have worked to organize a program that minimizes time on the bus and maximizes time together while introducing you to a city that is complex, creative, and caring.  Like other major urban areas in the United States, safety can be an issue.  Travel together and avoid staying out too late.  We use Uber or Lyft when we are not walking or taking the trolley in the downtown area.

Friday evening is Trolley Night in Memphis. We will have dinner at 7pm at the Rendezvous across from the Peabody.  We plan to be back to the hotel by 5:30pm.  For those who don’t want to slow down and rest, you might walk to Main Street, and hop a trolley (free) to explore the South Main Arts District, where shops and galleries are open.

If you are an early riser who likes some exercise, check out the redesigned Tom Lee Park, which opens September 2, or walk across the Big River Crossing to Arkansas.

If you plan to arrive early on Thursday and are not interested in golf, Graceland, or a brewery tour, or if you plan to depart later there are lots of things to do and places to see.  Here are a few of our favorites. Others can be found at at Memphis Travel.

Sun Studio

Visit the birthplace of rock 'n' roll at Sun Studio. This iconic recording studio is where legendary musicians like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis got their start. Take a guided tour and learn about the studio's impact on music history.

Stax Museum of American Soul Music

Explore the history of soul music at the Stax Museum. Located at the original site of Stax Records, this museum showcases exhibits on soul legends like Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s.

Bass Pro Shop

Located inside the iconic Pyramid building, Memphis’ Bass Pro Shop mega store spans over 500,000 square feet and has everything from shopping and dining to archery, and an aquariam. Take the elevator to the glass-floored cantilevering observation deck to enjoy spectacular views of the city.

Memphis Botanic Garden

Relax and enjoy the beauty of nature at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Explore various gardens, including a Japanese garden and a children's garden, and take a leisurely stroll through the grounds.

Peabody Ducks

Witness the famous Peabody Ducks at the Peabody Hotel. Every day, a group of ducks marches through the lobby to the hotel's fountain, creating a charming tradition that has delighted visitors for decades.

National Ornamental Metal Museum

Blues Hall of Fame

Memphis Zoo

Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum

Offering a comprehensive experience from the rural field hollers and sharecroppers of the 1930s, to Memphis’ musical heyday in the 70s, and its global influence.

Graceland

The former home of music legend Elvis Presley. Take a tour of the mansion, explore the exhibits showcasing his life and career, and pay your respects at his final resting place.

Beale Street

Only two blocks from the Peabody Hotel, Beale Street is a historic street lined with blues clubs, restaurants, and shops. Experience live music, sample southern cuisine, and immerse yourself in the energetic atmosphere.

Tom Lee Park

Located in downtown Memphis, Tom Lee Park offers panoramic views of the Mississippi River and the shores of Arkansas.

National Civil Rights Museum

Located at the site of the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the National Civil Rights Museum chronicles the history of the civil rights movement in the United States. It's a powerful and educational experience.

Big River Crossing

Once a historic railroad bridge, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian walking and biking bridge across the Mississippi. Enjoy views of Memphis skyline and the Arkansas countryside from a unique vantage point.

Memphis has been featured as a travel destination in Conde Nast, the New York Times and others at least in part due to the quality and variety of restaurants that are so much more than our famous BBQ. We will have dinner Friday evening at Rendezvous BBQ so that you can get your BBQ fix, although a sure way to start an argument in Memphis is to ask a crowd their opinions on the best BBQ place (my answer is Cozy Corner). For those interested in suggestions about other BBQ joints please text, call or email Max. Taxis in Memphis are spotty as are Ubers and Lyfts so give yourself extra time if you want to try one of the truly great restaurants listed below that are not downtown or carpool with friends who have driven.  The concierge at the Peabody Hotel is another resource for recommendations and reservations. The chefs noted below have participated in Le Bon Appetit, a terrific Le Bonheur fundraiser that has outgrown all inside spaces and features dozens of food, wine, and spirits booths to sample. For information on event dates contact the foundation at (901)- 287-6308.
