Where to Eat in Sacramento
If you find yourself with some free time and an empty stomach, head to one of these highly recommended restaurants in Sacramento.
Steakhouse classics and craft cocktails, in Hyatt Regency. 4.5 Google stars. The biggest advantage is that it is in the hotel. No need to walk.
Short walk from hotel. New American and French cuisine, one of best restaurants in the city. Outstanding wine list, creative cuisine, great bar. 4.6 Google stars.
French brasserie-inspired, with decidedly French menu, wine, & cocktails. Across the street from Ella. 4.5 Google stars.
Mexican cuisine, with a Yucatan focus. Extensive tequila collection. Short walk. 4.4 Google stars.
In brick-lined vaulted space near hotel. American cuisine, with good cocktails and craft beer. 4.5 Google stars.
Upscale local Japanese chain offering sushi, small plates. Both take-out and dine-in. 4.6 Google stars. A few blocks walk. No reservations.
Eclectic urban restaurant offering American comfort food. Designed by designer of W Hotels. 4.4 Google stars. Short walk.
In the lobby of The Sawyer Hotel, hip steakhouse vibe in DoCo. 4.4 Google stars. Slightly longer walk or Uber ride.
Elevated Chinese cuisine. Downtown Sacramento’s oldest restaurant. 4.5 Google stars. Short walk.
Sophisticated, elevated American fare in a classic setting. Staff in formal attire. Fabulous wine list, with extensive cellar in basement. 4.6 Google stars. Definitely a drive (self or Uber) to Old Sacramento, where we will be on Friday morning for the boat ride.
Napa Valley Wine Tasting
Below is a list of wineries that allow tasting, usually by appointment only, although some may allow walk-ins. (We recommend making appointments.) The list includes only those that we have direct experience with, either with visits or tasting their wine. There are hundreds of wineries in the Napa Valley, and there are many that have excellent wines. I would encourage some online investigation prior to making appointments to see if a particular winery might make the kind of wine you enjoy.
One of our favorites. Winery resembles Babylonian temple. Great variety of good wines.
Sparkling wines, established by Moet et Chandon, near Yountville.
Winner of the red wine prize in the Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting of French and American wines in 1976. (To be distinguished from Stags’ Leap Winery, also with good wine.) On Silverado Trail, a 25 mile road bordering the easr side of the Napa Valley, with no towns or stoplights, and a great bike route, with wide shoulders.
Part of the Plumpjack group of wineries, owned by our governor, Gavin Newsome. The first wine they produced garnered 100 points. Lovely, sustainable winery along Silverado Trail. Other Plumpjack group wines are Plumpjack and Cade, both quite good.
Excellent wines. Many of the wines are single clone cabs, with interesting variations between them. Lovely outdoor space for tasting.
Notable for their single vineyard cabs. Sister winery to Far Niente, just up the Oakville Grade.
Another sparkling wine winery, associated with Mumm Champagne in France.
DEL DOTTO ESTATE WINERY & CAVES
3 different wineries and caves for this label. We have been only to the Atlas Peak Road location, but they have a new cave near Yountville.
We have been here multiple times, including harvesting and lunch. Owned by daughter of founder of Best Buy and her husband, who was one of the first employees. Fabulous wine, overseen by Queen of Napa winemakers, Heidi Barrett. Up Spring Mountain Road. We used to be on their mailing list.
Very good wines, across a variety of varietals. One of our favorite California Chardonnays.
Winner of the white wine competition in the Judgment of Paris wine tasting, celebrated in “Bottle Shock”, a movie about the tasting. It leaves out a lot of detail, but very good wine, both reds and whites. Owner, Beau Barrett, is married to Heidi Barrett, whom I mentioned in connection with Fantesca Winery. Lovely old building and grounds, including a lake with two gazebos where we have had picnics in the past.
